Wheelchair Service
The Wheelchair Service provides a comprehensive service for children and young adults who have a long term and permanent problem with their mobility. <SEND>
The Service aims to:
Provide a framework to clinically assess children (30 months and over) and young adults who have a permanent (more than 6 months) problem with mobility through disability or illness. Children under 30months old are seen on a case by case basis.
Provide wheelchairs/buggies complete with postural support and pressure cushioning to facilitate safe mobility.
Provide continued support/review for the child/young adult with regards to their ongoing mobility needs.
Evaluate the Service and the equipment it provides on an ongoing basis to ensure the equipment is 'fit for purpose' and where possible to be able to offer the child/young adult a choice of wheelchair/buggy (with regards to type and colour) within the agreed range of NHS provision.
Encourage the child/young adult to be as functional and as independent as possible through the provision of appropriate mobility equipment.
Encourage social inclusion.
Provide planned preventative maintenance for the mobility equipment issued.
Referrals (using the Wheelchair Service referral form) are accepted from the GP, Paediatrician/Consultant, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Social Service Team member who are involved in the child/young adults care.
Once the child/young adult is registered with the Wheelchair Service access back into the service can be direct from the family or guardian as well as any of the above.
