Family Links - Nurturing Programme
The Nurturing Programme aims to help adults understand and manage feelings and behaviour and become more positive and nurturing in their relationships with children and each other. It encourages an approach to relationships that gives children and adults an emotionally healthy start for their lives and learning.
American child psychologist Dr Stephen J Bavolek developed the Nurturing Programme in the 1970s. Bavolek researched dysfunctional and abusive family interactions; he identified four destructive parental behaviour patterns and developed the Nurturing Programme to counter these.
The Nurturing Programme Four Constructs
As the building blocks of emotional health and relationship skills, the Nurturing Programme uses the Four Constructs:
- self-awareness
- appropriate expectations
- positive discipline
- empathy
