National Deaf CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) North

Deaf CAMHS (Northern Region) has centres in Manchester, Newcastle and York. The service is flexible about where meetings and sessions take place, so distance from a centre should not be an issue. The North East service is based in Benton House covering the North East although appointments are often carried out at home or in the child/young person's school/college, or at healthcare centres/G.P surgery's local to the child/young persons home. Referral is made via a referral form which can be requested directly from the service. Contact with the service can be made by telephone, letter, text, fax or email. Consultation prior to referral is encouraged. <SEND>

Address: Benton House, 136 Sandyford Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 1QE
Telephone number: 01912106875

The service works with children aged the age of 18 who are profoundly deaf. The service also works with hearing children who have Deaf parents. All communication modes are valued by the team. The team consists of Deaf and hearing staff including English/BSL interpreters.

The team will see any child/young person/family who meets the referral criteria of having a severe or profound hearing loss and a mental health condition.

The office premises are fully accessible to wheelchair users

All staff are able to communicate in British Sign Language at different levels. We work closely with BSL/English and other language interpreters when appropriate.

Service opening times are Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Referrals must be made through any professional the family is working with. This can include the G.P, Paediatrician, Teacher of the Deaf, School or Social Worker.

The service is part of the NHS and commissioned by NHS England.
